Add to Cart Henry James's reputation as The Master is so familiar that it's hard to imagine he was ever someone on whom some things really were lost. This is the story of the year to when the young novelist moved to Paris, drawn by his literary idols living at the center of the early modern movement in art. As Peter Brooks skillfully recounts, James largely failed to appreciate or even understand the new artistic developments teeming around him during his Paris sojourn. But living in England twenty years later, he would recall the aesthetic lessons of Paris, and his memories of the radical perspectives opened up by French novelists and painters would help transform James into the writer of his adventurous later fiction. A narrative that combines biography and criticism and uses James's writings to tell the story from his point of view, Henry James Goes to Paris vividly brings to life the young American artist's Paris year--and its momentous artistic and personal consequences.

A narrative that combines biography and criticism and uses James's writings to tell the story from his point of view, Henry James Goes to Paris vividly brings to life the young American artist's Paris year--and its momentous artistic and personal consequences.

James's Paris story is one of enchantment and disenchantment. He initially loved Paris, he succeeded in meeting all the writers he admired Turgenev, Flaubert, Zola, Maupassant, Goncourt, and Daudet , and he witnessed the latest development in French painting, Impressionism.

But James largely found the writers disappointing, and he completely misunderstood the paintings he saw. He also seems to have fallen in and out of love in a more ordinary sense--with a young Russian aesthete, Paul Zhukovsky. Disillusioned, James soon retreated to England--for good. But James would eventually be changed forever by his memories of Paris. More about this book Winner of the Phi Beta Kappa Christian Gauss Award Resources Introduction [PDF] Reviews "In this affectionate study, Brooks concedes that the young James 'missed the point, completely,' but argues that what he observed in Paris deeply affected him, and was especially crucial to his late novels.

Amid "Autumn in Paris with its gray skies and nature's decay always fills my heart with equal parts melancholy and anger. Amidst the autumn gloom Daniela meets the oh-so-appealing vet, Dr. Thomas Brousse, and suddenly life seems a little brighter. Nichols' books often touch on serious issues, but her light and tender touch make each of her novels seem like a restorative visit to the City of Light. Daniela has such a tragic story in her past, and despite a couple of her choices in men, she is a strong and loving mother to her pre-teen son, Liviu and along with Baloo the dog, make up a gorgeous little family.

She has Another fun and steamy read set alongside our friends from La Boheme.

An Autumn in Paris

She has great support in Manon, her best friend, and their scene in setting the ghosts of bad boyfriends past to rest is hilarious!! Dana left quite the first impression Thomas was quite the guy. He was funny, loyal to a fault and he was a softie when it came to both animals and people.

He is a regular "Marshmallow Man". The relationship between Thomas and Dana was being slowly built but not in a way that was painfully slow. As a reader, they exposed me to differing cultures, and some slang in languages. It was a fun trip and I also ended up feeling like I had taken a romantic European trip from their adventure.

I also felt like the emotional parts of the story was handled well and felt realistic. But not only was there emotions but the story made me smile more than once. Some of that humor was provided by Liviu but Dana was no slouch when it came to witty humor. I really liked that Liviu was part of this story because he also added so much.

His interactions with Dana and Thomas and even his grandmother were an enjoyable, believable thing.

Autumn in Paris

So suited to his age and you got a pretty good look into his personality. Manon, a woman friend of Dana's adds some color and humor to the story. She was a great friend. It makes me smile again just remembering it. I thoroughly enjoyed Dana's Romanian mother, Ioana, the times that she showed up in the story. She was kind of flamboyant in a good way. I think Thomas put it best.

He realized that the way she dressed matched her personality. That was so discerning of him and kind too. Yes, the main characters do get together for world rocking sex. And of course that is before the past shows up to rock their worlds in an unexpected not quite as good way. Epilogue anyone? Oh yes, I always want one of those. And Daniela provides a good one from her P. It was kind of nostalgic to have some time spent at La Boheme since I have read some of the other books by Alix Nichols that featured it.

I just have to add how attractive I thought the eBook cover is. I voluntarily read an Advanced Reader Copy of this book and these are my honest thoughts about it.

Oct 28, Karissa rated it really liked it Shelves: After taking a divergent track with another genre, Alix is back to her romance roots with a simple, sweet story. Both of them feel tied to another but are falling slowly, inexorably, hopelessly for each other. He ticks all of her boxes--treats her well, enjoys spending time with her son, and cares for her pet. She ticks all of his--trustworthy, gorgeous without flaunting it, and genuine.

They enjoy each others' friends an After taking a divergent track with another genre, Alix is back to her romance roots with a simple, sweet story. They enjoy each others' friends and families and find spending time together easy and fun. Rather than a race to the end, this story slowly meanders, just like I imagine the Seine does, to its' conclusion. I loved how they met over a rambunctious pet at a vet appointment.

I enjoyed the misunderstanding that allowed Thomas and Dana to spend time together so comfortably. I appreciated how normal, relatable characters they were and found it easy to root for them.

I did find the end predictable, maybe from reading so many mystery books, and even with the slight curve ball was able to guess the ending. However, this did not detract from my enjoyment of a nice story with a happy ending.

I urge you to Step into An Autumn in Paris on a blustery, rainy day and enjoy losing yourself in their slow slide to coupledom. It is an easy, fun read I am sure you will enjoy. Oct 22, Becky Claxon rated it it was amazing. I hated seeing what had happened to each of them before they ever met. It broke my heart what happened to him. Thomas is such a caring person that wants to help everyone and animals.

I can see why he became a vet. Because of his soft heart, he is taken advantage of by a woman. I enjoyed watching Dana and Thomas become friends and then fall in love. I always love going back to the little cafe where most of the friends hang out. I loved the book, and strongly encourage you to read it. Oct 30, Linda rated it it was amazing.

It's obvious that author Alix Nichols loves Paris and knows how to present its best face while acknowledging, in this case through heroine single mother Daniela's straightened circumstances as an apartment building concierge, that not all Paris residents live a life of luxury. The hero and heroine are endearingly likeable people, so loyal to those they love and reluctant to move on. The secondary characters, right down to Baloo, the family dog, are great, too, and include a few who aren't particularly nice but add to the drama of the main couple's initial connection and reluctant courtship.

I can't think of anything I did not appreciate in this story, which was a quick read for me and well-written. I have read a number of the author's works, both contemporary romance and science fiction fantasy romance, and expect a good, obstacles overcome story with heart and passion.

This one did not disappoint. I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review. Oct 28, Jackie D rated it really liked it.

Thomas and Dana's tale of broken souls finding solace in one another is a beautifully written read full of marshmallow hearts, wit-filled banter, passion, chivalry and a side of hormonal teen knowledge thrown in!

Following along on their journey to happiness was a bumpy ride, riddled with self-doubt, heartache and challenging pasts, keeping me glued to my Kindle swiping pages, wanting to know how the perfectly imperfect characters would get their well deserved HEA.

I enjoy Alix Nichols contemporar Thomas and Dana's tale of broken souls finding solace in one another is a beautifully written read full of marshmallow hearts, wit-filled banter, passion, chivalry and a side of hormonal teen knowledge thrown in! I enjoy Alix Nichols contemporary romances, and was excited to get my hands on this book! Nov 03, Kristen Lewendon rated it it was amazing. Dana and Thomas are adorable together.

Seeing them heal from the traumas of their past relationships was beautiful to witness. And made the stumbling blocks in their way all the more tragic. I found both Dana and Thomas to be selectively blind to the truth about themselves. Dana could be strong for her son, a lioness protecting Liviu, but she was often reluctant to see or use that strength for her own benefit.

This book is sweet and emotional. And a lovely return by the author to contemporary romance. I received a complimentary advanced copy of this book from the author. Nov 02, Margaret Watkins rated it it was amazing. I came to the end of this book and very reluctantly closed my Kindle cover.

His Father’s Son solo ebook now on preorder!

It is one of those stories that jerks at the heartstrings and tugs at one's emotions. The author brings out the full ambiance of Paris in autumn, the pathos, the nostalgia and the uncertainty of romance. I loved the main characters with their humourous interaction and the slow build up from friendship to lovers. Dana's heartache and sorrow stem from past experience, whilst Thomas' loss is more recent.

However, as they ap I came to the end of this book and very reluctantly closed my Kindle cover. However, as they approach one another cautiously, they discover in each other not only a deep attraction but also a meeting of their souls. Typical of preteens, Liviu rounds the story off, bringing laugh-out-loud moments and some levity. The book is very well written, emotive and draws the reader's interest from the opening pages, right through to the end.

I received a copy of this book as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review. Oct 22, Zena rated it it was amazing. Emotionally stirring!
