Differential and integral notions are used only where absolutely necessary and are explained where they are used. Whether available in print, online, or via CD, these integrated resources are designed to save you time and help make class preparation, presentation, assessment, and course management more efficient and effective.
With HM Testing instructors can administer tests via print, network server, or the Web. The complete Solutions Manual files are included on this CD.
The resources can be browsed by thumbnail and description or searched by chapter, title, or keyword. Full transcripts accompany all audio commentary, to reinforce visual presentations and to accommodate different learning styles. This text-specific content is comprised of multiple-choice questions to test common misunderstandings, core objectives, and difficult concepts—all with an average time of 1 minute for feedback.
Additional hardware and software required; contact your Houghton Mifflin sales representative for more information.
These exercises are graded automatically. Through these course-management systems, Houghton Mifflin offers access to all assets such as Test Bank content, tutorials, and video lessons. WebAssign is a Houghton Mifflin partner offering an online homework system with text-specific end-of-chapter problems.
WebAssign was developed by teachers, for teachers. For information on this system, contact your HM representative. In addition, if you choose to enable it, your students will be able to see their own grades and homework, quiz, and test averages as the semester progresses, and even compare their scores with the class averages. Complete Solutions Guide, Thomas J. Hummel and Steven S. Zumdahl, presents detailed solutions for all end-of-chapter exercises in the text for the xx convenience of faculty and staff involved in instruction and for instructors who wish their students to have solutions for all exercises.
For the Student An extensive print and media package has been designed to assist students in working problems, visualizing molecular-level interactions, and building study strategies to fully comprehend concepts. This dynamic suite of products gives students many options for practice and communication.
It is different from the end-of-chapter homework provided in the text and online. These problems are designed to use as a standalone learning system in one of two ways: students can learn the problem solving process while doing actual homework problems or as a capstone assignment to determine whether they understand how to solve problems perhaps in final preparation for an exam.
If students can solve a particular problem with no assistance, they can proceed directly to the answer, and receive congratulations. However, if students need help, assistance is available through a series of hints. The procedure for assisting students is modeled after the way instructors would help students with a homework problem in their xxi offices. The hints are usually in the form of interactive questions that nudge students in the right direction without telling them how to solve the problem; the goal is to help students figure out how to successfully complete the problem themselves.
Often computer-based homework gives up and gives the correct solution after students fail two or three times. Students realize this and often just push buttons until the right answer comes up.
ChemWork never gives up on students; it never reveals the right answer—rather it helps students get to the correct solution. When we were first developing this approach we were concerned that students would become irritated at not having the answer easily revealed.
However, we observed that students actually appreciated doing the problems in a supportive yet demanding environment.
The good news is that this approach really helps them learn how to think like a chemist. When we started to use this system, we saw a significant increase in our exam scores.
Another important feature of ChemWork is that each student in the course receives a unique set of problems. This is accomplished by using a combination of algorithmic, datapool, and version questions and problems that are randomly selected by the computer.
If students are assigned similar but unique problems they can help each other, but everyone has to do their own problem set. ChemWork also has the capability to check for significant figures in calculations. Since it is a homework system, it is designed to tell students if the significant figures are incorrect in their answer without marketing the answer wrong.
This feature encourages students to pay attention to the significant figures without frustrating them so much that they give up.
E-structors help students with the process of problem solving rather than supply answers. Print Supplements for Students Study Guide, by Paul Kelter Northern Illinois University —a comprehensive self-study aid for students containing alternative strategies for solving problems, supplemental explanations for the most difficult material, and self-tests.
ISBN: Student Solutions Manual, by Tom Hummel University of Illinois —provides detailed solutions for half of the end-of-chapter exercises using the strategies emphasized in the text. ISBN: Acknowledgements The successful completion of this book is due to the efforts of many people. Charles Hartford, Vice President and Publisher, has extensive experience in crafting effective chemistry texts and was always supportive and furnished many creative ideas for the revision.
I greatly appreciate the efforts of Rebecca Berardy Schwartz, who did an excellent job as Development Editor on this project. Also, I wish to thank Nicole Moore, Marketing Manager, and Kris Bishop, Marketing Assistant, for their creative ideas and knowledge of the market to promote this title. In addition I am grateful to Cathy Brooks, Senior Project Editor, for managing the production of a very complex project.
Cathy is the best project editor in the business. I greatly appreciate the efforts of Tom Hummel from the University of Illinois who managed the revision of the end-of-chapter exercises and problems and the solutions manuals. I am grateful to Don DeCoste of the University of Illinois for many discussion about how students learn chemistry and for creating the discussion questions and new Challenge Problems.
Finally, I am deeply grateful to my multitalented wife, Susan Arena Zumdahl, for her cheerful help on all facets of this project and for making my life fun. My thanks and love go to our children and grandchildren for their love and support. I would also like to especially thank the following people for their hospitality during our trip to Europe and their constructive feedback as users of the fifth edition.
