I do not believe that one can claim to be a serious practitioner--or, for that matter, teacher--of business valuation without mastering the ideas presented in this definitive piece of work. For people who are not investment professionals but would like to learn the art of equity investing, Damodaran has written The Little Book of Valuation. It is shorter and the author has mostly kept complicated mathematics out, while lucidly explaining all the concepts related to valuation.

Some are more significant than others. In the early chapters, the author explains the difference between intrinsic and relative valuation. Next, he touches upon basic concepts like the time value of money and why risk needs to be factored in valuation estimates because assets with surer earnings deserve a higher valuation than those whose earnings are uncertain.

The author then explains how to carry out discounted cash flow valuation. This is followed by a chapter on the key multiples to be used for carrying out relative valuation.

He rounds up with the way of reconciling the results obtained from intrinsic and relative valuation. Valuation techniques for companies at different stages of their life cycles vary.

The assumptions that you make while valuing a company in its early or growth stage vary from those that you make while assessing the valuation of a mature company. In the second section, the methods for valuing companies at different stages of their life cycles are explained.

Valuation methodologies also vary depending on the type of company you are dealing with. Manufacturing companies have to be assessed differently from financial companies. Assessing a commodity company is similarly different from estimating the valuation of asset-light players whose valuation depends on intangibles like technology and brand name.
