Russia is in the midst of a rapid economic and geopolitical renaissance under the rule of Vladimir Putin, a tenacious KGB officer turned modern-day tsar. Understanding his rise to power provides the keys to understanding the shift in the energy trade from Saudi Arabia to Russia. This powerful new position threatens to unravel the political dominance of the United States once and for all. Discover how political coups, hostile takeovers, and assassinations have brought Russia to the center of the world's energy market Follow Putin's rise to power and how it has led to an upsetting of the global balance of trade Learn how Russia toppled a generation of robber barons and positioned itself as the most powerful force in the energy market Study Putin's long-range plans and their potential impact on the United States and the U. The Colder War takes a hard look at what is to come in a new global energy market that is certain to cause unprecedented impact on the U.

Putin not only had ambition, drive, and limitless self-confidence, he had a vision. A scholar of the reign of Peter the Great, he wanted nothing less than to elevate his country to a premier position among the nations of the world.

Given Russia's condition when he took over, that seemed a ridiculous pipe dream to anyone who noticed. But Putin had more than a vision; he had a plan: He would use Russia's greatest asset, its wealth of natural resources, to reconstruct the economy.

He would build a new superpower on a foundation of oil, gas, and uranium.

And then he would use these assets as weapons in the Colder War. Putin deeply understood the folly of conventional conflict. He'd watched the ignominious Soviet debacle in Afghanistan and the morale-sapping defeat in Chechnya.

He would be different. Yes, he would resort to military action when he deemed it necessary, and would do so with overwhelming force—his first official act was to brutally crush the Chechnyan rebellion once and for all. But for the most part his foreign policy has not been about guns, tanks, and missiles. He has forged trade agreements with other countries, not invaded them. He doesn't care anything about the politics, religion, or culture of a particular nation.

All he asks is if they're willing to do business with him. As a result, he's embraced such diverse international pariahs as theocratic Iran, Assad's Syria, and socialist Venezuela.

He's cut deals on all sides, everywhere from China to Israel, from Algeria to Brazil. And it's always about energy. Not that Americans would want him to lead them, of course, but compare that to the dismal domestic ratings for Bush, Obama, and the US Congress.

And why shouldn't they love him? Putin has accomplished everything by exploiting the economics and geopolitics of energy.

It offers some insight outside of mainstream it gets one star for that , But the author is either pressed to conceal the real truth or he is just ignorant. If I had to vote? I would vote for the former the guy is definitely smart. However, the author's analysis in spite of many charts and such is severely lacking. His analysis is largely superficial and propaganda driven.

Naturally so. So, like others, he drowns the reader in an ocean of hear-say supported by 'convincing' graphs, of course , which he picked up in mainstream media and elsewhere It is convenient, after all. Thinking is not convenient, for when one does some thinking, the revelations may be life-shattering, and no one wants to look beyond their comfort zone.

One person found this helpful. This is an excellent book, and I highly recommend your reading it. The author really has a good grip on the type of man Putin is, and what he seeks. I wonder if Marin Katusa had any fear of retribution for what he wrote in this book.

The author is very knowledgeable about energy, mining and their related fields. He gets right to the subject matter, doesn't waste your time with useless views or go on tangents on non-essential topics. He tells you how it is, how he sees it, and how to profit from wise investing in the field. I would download this book again if I needed to.

My only complaint is that he doesn't cite his sources for specific claims- there is a list of sources in the back of the book but it would be better if they were linked directly to the claims that he's making some of which are pretty major.

Interesting background about Russia, the energy market, and the petrodollar and its demise. This book may very well prove to be "prophetic" in nature in regards to the petrodollar, but that is something which should be common knowledge by now to anyone watching and reading news from non mainstream media sources. Overall interesting reading, though I noticed a few minor inaccuracies. A very good wake up call for the west as to the intentions of Putin on the world stage.

What it lacks is the perspective of the leaders in the West to counter Putin. Subjects Business Finance Nonfiction.
