From Shel Silverstein, the celebrated author of The Giving Tree and Where the Sidewalk Ends, comes The Missing Piece Meets the Big O, sure to delight fans of .

Plot[ edit ] The story centers on a circular shape-like creature that is missing a wedge-shaped piece of itself. It doesn't like this, and sets out to find its missing piece, singing: Oh, I'm lookin' for my missin' piece I'm lookin' for my missin' piece Hi-dee-ho, here I go lookin' for my missin' piece It starts out on a grand adventure searching for the perfect piece to complete itself, while singing and enjoying the scenery. But after the circle finally finds the exact-sized wedge that fits it, it begins to realize that it can no longer do the things it used to enjoy doing, like singing or rolling slowly enough to enjoy the company of a worm or butterfly. It decides that it was happier when searching for the missing piece than actually having it. So it gently puts the piece down, and continues searching happily. Silverstein's drawing which appeared on the cover of the book was used on the cover of the album. In the popular teen fiction book An Abundance of Katherines , this book is mentioned as a gift to child prodigy Colin Singleton from his father. When asked the question, "Do you sometimes feel like a circle with a missing piece?

What does the circle enjoy doing? Is the circle happy after it finds its Missing Piece? Why or why not? What do you want? Is it similar to what the circle wants?

Why do you think the circle keeps on looking for its Missing Piece even after it left the one that fit perfectly?

Can you rely on other people and still be independent? Do you need other people to be happy? Quest The circle finds that it is happiest when searching for the Missing Piece.

Why does the circle let go of its Missing Piece? They have such beautiful lighting here normally. Maybe it's too early", said Danai as we were sitting at a table next to the window. That book!

Do you know it? I love it! It was, of course, the book I'm writing this "review" about. Yes, it's a picture book. Inconspicuous, right? One could easily dismiss it at first sight as merely a children's book. Another strong message one could get from it is that judging a book from its cover is seldom wise.

This book can talk on fantastically different levels to people of different ages. Don't they say, after all, that if one knows her stuff she'll be able to explain it to a child? I don't know about the children that read this book, but I Understood.

And I urge everyone to experience how inspirationally and masterfully just a few simple shapes and sentences can carry a profoundly deep message on the meaning of the human condition. Things we all know are true deep inside; we've only been looking away for too long.

I suppose you could read this with a feminist eye, but I just enjoy the pictures and the story. I was touched by the transformation of the Missing Piece from a dependent personality searching for its exact complement to an independent piece that can eventually roll alongside its lifelong friend.

The Missing Piece Meets the Big O

Our professor went thru this book and compared it to the process of relationships and I never looked at it the same again. Good children's book in that sense or just a simple way to look at relationships.

Mostly when we feel alone from companionship and feel that a piece is missing, this piece is our need. Others wait to be noticed, others try to attract attention to themselves, others try to fill the void with others but they too miss pieces Feb 21, Peacegal rated it really liked it.

Once again, we have what is ostensibly a children's book about sentient shapes, but is in actuality a story of human relationships. Correctly or not, I imagined "the missing piece" to be female. After being dropped in the previous story, the piece sits around waiting to be picked up and made whole again.

However, all of the shapes who roll by just aren't right. Women will no doubt laugh While it wasn't quite the epic The Missing Piece, The Big O is nevertheless a great, thought-provoking sequel.

Women will no doubt laugh out loud at the circle who has "too many pieces"--no doubt, we all know men like that.

One day, the piece meets a "Big O. The Big O, however, encourages the piece to practice rolling on its own--that it doesn't need a partner in order to be a whole entity. The piece works and works until it wears off its edges and becomes a little O--who can roll right alongside the Big O. The inference is that one doesn't need to be attached to a partner in order to be whole, and relationships in which both partners are their own people are best.

Apr 05, Vonia rated it really liked it Shelves: What can I say about this? It must be education that does it. True love does not complete us. It does not fit perfectly like two puzzle pieces. It holds us up, we grow together, we love, we make each other stronger, better, more loving individuals.

We are equals. We become a "we" that love fully. Jun 21, Anna rated it liked it Shelves: Nothing special, but fine. I prefer "The Missing Piece". May 07, Jordan Davidson rated it it was amazing Shelves: The piece tries to attract the attention of others in many ways, such as by making a spectacle of itself and by trying to make itself look more attractive to passerby.

It eventually finds an almost-whole that it thinks it can fit into, but eventually it grows and surpasses the gap in the almost-whole and is left behind.

Eventually the piece meets a circular object called the Big O. The Big O teaches the missing piece that it can move on its own if it teaches itself how, and the missing piece does just that. Fable Content Warnings: None My Opinion: Always searching for something to complete us, even if the means by which we achieve the attention we think we want from others.

The Missing Piece Meets the Big O

But corners, the Big O assures it, can wear off — another elegant metaphor for the self-refinement necessary in our personal growth. With that, the Big O rolls off, leaving the missing piece alone once more — but, this time, with an enlivening idea to contemplate. Gradually, it begins to bounce instead of bump and then roll instead of bounce — rolling, like it always dreamt of doing with the aid of another, only all by itself.

The Missing Piece Meets the Big O is immeasurably wonderful in a way to which neither text nor pixel does any justice.
