Post a schematic and some photos. There's not much to go on right now.

Microsteping doesnt work at all. That design shows no evidence of sense resistors - used to measure current through the motor coils.

If that is the case then microstepping is not possible. It may not even work at all.

Testing with resistors won't work. They don't have inductance. Use a voltmeter to measure the voltage at m1, m2, m3 to make sure it is in the right mode. Open source design already available.
