Although they try to depict in various terms what exactly is the content of Buddhism, none has been accurate as the Tripitaka. It contains the unmodified, true teachings of Lord Buddha in its actual context. The Tripitaka is a tri-fold writing. History reveals that the Tripitaka was coordinated at the First Council of the Maha Sangha soon after the parinirvana passing away of Lord Buddha, in order to preserve his teachings which had been only memorized up to that moment. Due to this immediate action taken by the then Sangha, the purest version of Buddhist teaching was included into the Tripitaka, without letting any elements to be missed or altered with time. Therefore, to date, the Tripitaka remains the most valuable and most reliable source of original Theravada Buddhist teachings. Vinaya Pitaka Out of the three pitakas, this is the area that deals with rules and regulations that are meant for Buddhist bhikkus and bhikkunis monks and nuns. Sutra Pitaka This section of the scripture contains the discourses held by Lord Buddha. Abhidharma Pitaka The last of three, Abhidharma pitaka contains a detailed analysis of Buddhist teachings. So what you find in this section awakens a deeper sense on life than other simply organized records. These range from the extraordinarily dark, grim, and painful hell realms all the way up to the most sublime, refined and exquisitely blissful heavenly realms. Existence in every realm is impermanent; in the cosmology taught by the Buddha there is no eternal heaven or hell.

Beings are born into a particular realm according to both their past kamma. These texts remain the most complete record of early Buddhist teachings.

The suttas fill thousands of pages, and it is a daunting task for most readers to read through the many volumes. A Taste of Salt draws pages containing the central teachings of the Buddha from the roughly 5, pages of the Sutta Pitaka.

The purpose of this collection is to make these essential texts more accessible to meditators and students of Buddhism. All rights Reserved. Partners Links Menu Album list:: Social Bookmarks.

The Sutta Nipata "The Sutta Collection" , the fifth book of the Khuddaka Nikaya, consists of 71 short suttas divided into five vaggas chapters. The Vimanavatthu of the Khuddaka Nikaya is a collection of 83 stories in verse describing the vimana [vimaana] — a kind of personal heavenly mansion — inhabited by beings reborn as gods or goddesses devata [devataa] as a reward for meritorious deeds performed by them as human beings.

All the stories follow a similar pattern. They begin with an introductory verse or verses in which the god or goddess is asked about the cause for his or her rebirth within that particular mansion.

The deva thereupon relates his or her previous good deeds. The Petavatthu contains 51 poems, each explaining how unwholesome deeds led to the rebirth of a being into the miserable realm of the "hungry ghosts" peta.

The Theragatha, the eighth book of the Khuddaka Nikaya, consists of poems — 1, stanzas in all — in which the early monks bhikkhus recount their struggles and accomplishments along the road to arahantship.

Their stories are told with often heart-breaking honesty and beauty, revealing the deeply human side of these extraordinary men, and thus serve as inspiring reminders of our own potential to follow in their footsteps. The Therigatha, the ninth book of the Khuddaka Nikaya, consists of 73 poems — stanzas in all — in which the early nuns bhikkhunis recount their struggles and accomplishments along the road to arahantship.
