You Are Here: Around the World in 92 Minutes: Photographs from the International Space Station. New York: Little.

If you're wondering what gift to get the astronauts aboard the International Space Station this holiday season and if not, why aren't you? For the rest of us Earthlings though, Hadfield's "Guide" is fair game — as many have already found out. Since being released a month ago, the book has launched to be the top of the lists in Canada and has ranked in the top 20 books selling in the United States. It is selling because it has worthwhile content. Does that mean you wrote the book while circling the planet? Chris Hadfield: I wish I could have had the time, but there just wasn't time to write a book while I was in orbit. I had a bunch of it laid out before, and of course the experience of being in space was so rich that there was all types of stuff to add to it afterwards. Books get written in bursts and stages, but I first started thinking about it 10 years ago and started laying out what I might put in. Many years ago, I wrote out notes on how I thought the book should go. And then my wife and I were talking about it, maybe three or four years ago, that I should really do it, and it would make sense affiliated with when I finished flying in space. I started working on it in earnest about two years ago.

It is really just a distillation of all the talks I have given for the past 21 years. People are interested in space, and I enjoy the experiences and I talk about them, but always my purpose of my talks and the underlying reason that I am talking to them is to try to bring it back to, Why does this matter? What is the good in it? How does this change your decision-making and your understanding or your perspective such that it accomplishes something? So it occurred to me a couple of years ago while [my wife] and I were out walking the dogs, it really is an " Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth ," and that's where all of it comes back to being worth talking about.

Was that your intention?

CH: When I have a complicated system, say like the T [jet] hydraulics, or the Soyuz [capsule] motion control system, the way I have learned over the last 40 years, to truly understand it, is to distill it down to a one-pager where all the information I need is written down on one 8.

It serves me two purposes. One, it forces me to condense my thinking into what really matters so I have the relevant nature of it. The other is, it serves as a quick reminder. So when I am getting ready for a sim[ulation], or I'm flipping through things getting ready to go to space, I can look at this page — and sure, it's got the information on it — but to me it helps me remember the details that are significant to me. When I was writing the book, I tried to write it in the same vein.

You could write a long paragraph on a topic, but if you do not give someone an easy way to remember it, it can get a little bit lost.

Astronaut Chris Hadfield's Guide to Writing 'An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth'

I tried to distill in just a few words something pithy or key about the idea so that it would be easier for people to remember. Then hopefully the next time they are faced with a scary situation, or a complex leadership situation or a change in their life, those few words will pop into their head — "I'm climbing down the ladder, that's what is happening here," and then the content of the idea will flow naturally from their initial triggered thought.

It works for me, and it has really been the only way I have been able to memorize and internalize all the complex things I have had to remember over the years. And it was almost a product of the book itself. When I started writing a chapter, I would refer to the chapter in my mind by that little, quick summary thing because it helped keep me on topic.

This book is truly amazing, that is it, no other words to describe such great writing, and such a great story , two things a great book needs to have!

But "whats the 'bias'? Chris Hadfield is a legend and a "true Canadian hero"! Rated 5 out of 5 by Mian from Inspiring and Funny! If you're at all ambitious, or have dreams about your future so, everyone then this book is for you.

There's a particular part of the book that I remember vividly, where Hadfield talks about never being afraid of not becoming an astronaut because he never put himself in a position or career he didn't enjoy because he thought it would take him closer to NASA.

That stuck with me, and it's a lesson I haven't heard from anywhere or anyone else. Truly inspiring, and if he ever wrote another book like this I'd snatch it up in a heartbeat, as should you. Rated 5 out of 5 by Shania from Something That I Needed To Read I've always been a lover of space--not necessarily the mathematics behind it, but more so the beauty of it, the wonders, and the curiosity.

I think that I'm like that with life too, but a part of me always felt ashamed of it. I've never had a clear path in life, and I'm still terrified, confused, and curious. Hadfield's little book is so inspiring. I've never read something that I've connected with more, even though it's based on an experience I will never have like I'm gonna go to space soon, right?

If you're interested in a piece with advice, wisdom, hard work, support systems, and never giving up this is for you.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Stephanie from An incredible look into the space program This book mixes descriptions of Hadfield's experiences in the space program with the CSA, NASA, and working alongside the Russian cosmonaut program with clarity on how he approaches situations that the average person might think of as terrifying or dangerous or complicated.

At times, it has the air of a self-help book, but it's framed in terms of answering questions like, "Weren't you scared when the shuttle launched?

Reading about HR obstacles he overcame to become an astronaut as a Canadian was truly inspiring. I love stories of hard work and perseverance paying off. While I really enjoyed the book very much, the self-help component seemed a little tedious - I really just wanted to read his story, and felt like it was interrupted too much. The concept was great, though. Rated 5 out of 5 by Victor from Love this! Love it Date published: Rated 4 out of 5 by John Belshaw from Worldly One of the most generous autobiographical accounts I have encountered.

Hadfield denies the reader very little and gives us so much.

Astronaut Chris Hadfield's Guide to Writing 'An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth'

Chris Hadfield has a light and humorous way of recounting his experiences, giving the reader insight into what it takes to be an astronaut, but, more importantly, the life lessons he learned along the way that are relevant to us all. Rated 5 out of 5 by Polilla from WOW! From that point onward everything he did was to obtain his goal to be an astronaut, even though here in Canada there was not yet a space agency.

After the Introduction appetizer, he has divided the book into three sections: Part 2 — Liftoff 7. Tranquility Base, Kazakhstan 8. Aim to Be a Zero Life off Earth Soft Landings Climbing Down the Ladder This is an exciting, interesting, incredible adventure told in an easy-to-read way. What he had to do to realize his dream is daunting. What he shares about life is sound and inspiring. The paragraph that spoke to my heart is as follows: You have to figure out for yourself how to enjoy and celebrate them, and then move on.

It is not only about travelling and living in Space, but also about his work as a fighter jet pilot when he lost several friends in flying accidents. In flowing conversational language he takes us all through the difficult journey that opened his way into NASA and eventually to commanding the space station where he conducted a record-setting number of scientific experiments.

He also handled emergencies while in Space and became well-known for his activity on Twitter and his incredible photographs taken during his five-month stay on the space station he had helped build. The information he provides is riveting. It is so worth it. Chris Hadfield is and will become a legend in Canada's 21st Century…a remarkable and dedicated man.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Lisa from Great book! Well written and enjoyable. Chris Hadfield is a great example of humility, perseverance, and curiosity. What a hero! Rated 3 out of 5 by Moosie from A True Canadian Hero Love Chris Hadfield, his humour and everything he did while up in space but found the book to be just "ok" Regardless he's still a true Canadian hero!

A lot of "declared" self-help books use positive thinking as their sole tool. This is an intelligently written but accessible book about goal setting, life strategy and leadership. It describes harnessing the powers of desire and restraint, of criticism, of positive AND negative thinking, of study and preparation for those who usually succeed easily, and of the value of humility in leadership roles to promote personal and team success.

Did I mention he is an awesome Canadian and an astronaut? Rated 5 out of 5 by Anonymous from This book eliminates the need for a "Self-Help" section in any bookstore. I'm being dramatic of course but not too far from the truth. Many books are quite motivating and inspiring, but are written by those who reached the success they promise you from the sales of the book you are reading. This is not that kind of book. Written by Canadian Astronaut Chris Hadfield, this book teaches you what it takes to become an Astronaut and go to space.

But even more importantly, how to effectively reach your goals and the mindset needed to pretty much accomplish anything in life. After all, he's been to space more than once. If he thinks you can do it It teasingly starts with him describing how he is trying to squeeze out of the shuttle to go on a spacewalk. You don't quite know what happens until later on. But it's a great hook that makes you want to keep reading. In less than three hundred pages he somehow succeeds in taking you through his journey as a Test Pilot all the way to being Commander of the International Space Station.

And somewhere in-between, thanks to the help of hundreds of people, he also creates the first music video in space! In conclusion, this book is so well written, you feel as though you are going through the Astronaut program, feel the ups and the few downs and learn the coping strategies one needs in order to not only become an Astronaut, but a positive and happy human being.

It will most likely inspire you to follow the path you feared but have wanted to walk on all your life.
