That's not to say that there are no consistent themes. Here are the ones I picked out: Family and friends -- Young has no illusions that he has been a perfect friend, husband, or father. It may be something that has come with age, but he takes special care not only to tell about his flaws, but to give his appreciation for what so many people have given to or shared with him, whether it be his wife, Pegi, his children, special musicians like Ben Keith, or the collaborators and friends like David Briggs and Larry Johnson that have meant so much to him.

Pono and the future of digital music -- This is probably Young's greatest professional passion right now. He rants about the degradation of music through MP3 compression at the same time that so much music has become available as never before. His own response is Pono, an un-degraded format that retains all the data from original master recordings.

He loves the wowed reactions he gets from listeners who have only ever heard digitized, compressed recordings when he plays Pono recordings.

Lincvolt -- Young has merged his lifelong love of old, big cars Lincolns, Cadillacs,. You'll hear over and over about the Lincvolt project. He seems to have little regard for the newer hybrids, but a true love for the art of bringing those old, big cars of the 50s and 60s back to life with new, environmentally friendly power plants. The Muse -- Young's music has never been predictable, and he makes little attempt to explain why he has taken this turn or that turn. He truly regards himself as guided by "the Muse" and taken wherever it wants him to go.

It's made him "difficult" both for his musical partners and for his professional managers and recording companies.

That's just the way it is -- the deal you make with the Muse. What comes through the whole thing is a self-portrait of a flawed person who knows that he is flawed, tries to overcome his flaws, knows he never will be perfect and is appreciative of the people who work with him and care about him anyway.

It sounds a little defeatist, but let's face it -- we're all flawed, and there's virtue in not pretending otherwise. There's that sincerity again. Living on a very tight budget, I hesitated to download this for my Kindle.

After reading reviews a time or two, I decided to splurge. After all, Neil Young is one of the heroes of my distant past. I read others complaining about the aimlessness of this story and yet I found it to be compelling.

I walked the path alongside of him and loved each and every word. I was elated to hear how well he and Stephen Stills got along, for some reason I always assumed it to be different. I loved his descriptions of David Crosby and Graham Nash, each sitting exactly where I had imagined them to be. Having moved to California and living in the environs of where lived during the same time that he lived there, I could feel the dampness of the forests and the old dirt roads overlooking the Pacific.

It was like sitting at my grandfather's feet in front of a roaring fire, if my grandfather had been Neil Young. He brought me back to that idealist that I was. I loved the way he'd take a turn into the purity of the sound of music or the eclectic collection of trains and cars.

I was a willing traveler as he'd tell his tales. I loved this narrative. I loved this book. See all reviews. site Giveaway allows you to run promotional giveaways in order to create buzz, reward your audience, and attract new followers and customers. Learn more about site Giveaway.

Deals and Shenanigans. PillPack Pharmacy Simplified. He also toured extensively, either as a solo act or with his backing band, Crazy Horse. Neil Young will be touring Europe with his band throughout the summer. Moreover, he also does it in a way that may—at first—seem unconventional to the fans hoping to be transported back in time to the s and the s. For instance, Paul McCartney—with his friend and English author Barry Miles—decided to tackle only his youth and career with the Beatles in Many Years From Now , while Pete Townshend wrote his autobiography himself, dealing with all aspects of his life and career, from his birth to his career with the Who, the films he was involved with, or his solo albums and touring.

Both McCartney and Townshend narrate their story in chronological order. On the contrary, Waging Heavy Peace may sometimes be confusing to go through.

While one chapter deals with his playing with Crosby, Stills and Nash, the following one may very well raise the issue of his relative estrangement from his father during his early teens. Nevertheless, once accepted by the reader, such format makes Waging Heavy Peace marvelously driving and pleasant to read.

What this book lacks in continuity thus compensates in dynamism. Moreover, that impression is reinforced by the language Young uses throughout his autobiography.

I know. It thus gives the impression that he is directly addressing the reader, without hiding himself behind posh vocabulary. One may even argue that such simplicity and honesty, whether in language or attitude, are the reasons why Young has been so popular for decades.

Although such themes are not entirely absent from this autobiography, they are not as central as one might have expected. Nevertheless, more pages dedicated to such subjects would probably have been appreciated.

Indeed, as much as he thought of himself as an anti-war hippie in the late s, Neil Young remains involved in various causes that matter to him today. These are the red threads at the core of his book, to such an extent that several times, the artist explains that he muses over writing other books completely about those particular subjects.

The evolution of the making of this vehicle is an important part of this book. Neil Young is very convincing as an environmentally-responsible artist, which makes the subject of this car one of the most interesting ones in the entire book.
