The sixth edition of Contemporary oral and maxillofacial surgery is a glossy hardback billing itself as a comprehensive description of the basic surgical procedures performed in general practice, as well as the more advanced and complex surgical management of patients referred to a specialist hospital department.
Whilst it is by no means exhaustive, it does indeed cover an extraordinarily wide range of topics, from the very basics of simple exodontia and pulpal pathologies, to surgical management of complex facial trauma and orofacial clefts, pre-prosthetic surgery and implant placement.
The book is split into nine parts that are further divided into smaller chapters making it quick and easy to navigate. Despite its somewhat intimidating size, the text is concise, yet detailed, and very easy to read.
However, I found this book's main appeal to be the vast number of high quality, though perhaps not for the faint hearted, clinical photographs. These really bring the book to life and help the reader visualise the procedure or clinical presentation discussed.
The text is also broken up by informative diagrams illustrating the relevant anatomy as well as detailed drawings taking you step by step through each surgical procedure described in the prose. One downside potential readers should be aware of is that this text is of American origin and as such its authors and contributors all hail from the US.
Therefore, some of the nomenclature and instruments described may seem a little alien. More importantly, caution should be exercised where protocols for treatment or drug therapies are being discussed as these appear to have been derived from North American guidelines and do differ to some of our practices in the UK.
On the whole I think that although this book could not be considered a definitive text, this fantastically illustrated guide would certainly make a great addition to any budding maxillofacial surgeon's library.
