In addition to its Cisco Networking Academy Program titles, Cisco Press publishes an extensive list of networking technology and certication pub- xviii lications that provide a wide range of resources.
Cisco Systems has also established a network of professional training companiesthe Cisco Learning Partnersthat provide a full range of Cisco training courses. They offer training in many formats, including e-learning, self-paced, and instructor-led classes. Their instructors are Cisco-certied, and Cisco creates their materials. Thank you for choosing this book and the Cisco Networking Academy Program. CCNP 1 teaches you how to design, congure, maintain, and scale routed networks.
In addition, it details the important techniques used for route ltering and redistribution. This Books Goal The goal of this book is to build on the routing concepts you learned while studying for the CCNA exam and to teach you the foundations of advanced routing concepts.
The exam certies that the successful candidate has the knowledge and skills necessary to use advanced IP addressing and routing to implement scalability for Cisco routers connected to LANs and WANs.
One key methodology used in this book is to help you discover the exam topics you need to review in more depth, to help you fully understand and remember those details, and to help you prove to yourself that you have retained your knowledge of those topics.
This book does not try to help you pass by memorization; it helps you truly learn and understand the topics. This book focuses on introducing techniques and technology for enabling WAN solutions. First, this book is intended for students interested in advanced routing technologies. In the classroom, this book serves as a supplement to the online curriculum. This book is also appropriate for corporate training faculty and staff members, as well as general users.
This book is also useful for network administrators who are responsible for implementing and troubleshooting enterprise Cisco routers and router conguration. It is also valuable for anyone who is interested in learning advanced routing concepts and passing the Building Scalable Cisco Internetworks exam BSCI This Books Features Many of this books features help facilitate a full understanding of the topics covered in this book: ObjectivesEach chapter starts with a list of objectives that you should have mastered by the end of the chapter.
The objectives reference the key concepts covered in the chapter. Figures, examples, tables, and scenariosThis book contains gures, examples, and tables that help explain theories, concepts, commands, and setup sequences that reinforce concepts and help you visualize the content covered in the chapter. In addition, the specic scenarios provide real-life situations that detail the problem and the solution. Chapter summariesAt the end of each chapter is a summary of the concepts covered in the chapter.
It provides a synopsis of the chapter and serves as a study aid. Key termsEach chapter includes a list of dened key terms that are covered in the chapter. The key terms appear in color throughout the chapter where they are used in context.
The denitions of these terms serve as a study aid. In addition, the key terms reinforce the concepts introduced in the chapter and help you understand the chapter material before you move on to new concepts. Check Your Understanding questions and answersReview questions, presented at the end of each chapter, serve as a self-assessment tool. They reinforce the concepts introduced in the chapter and help test your understanding before you move on to a new chapter.
Study guides and certication exam practice questionsTo further assess your understanding, you will nd on the companion CD-ROM additional in-depth questions in study guides created for each chapter. You can easily spot these activities by the following icons: Interactive Media Activities included on the companion CD-ROM are hands-on drag-and-drop, ll-in-the-blank, and matching exercises that help you master basic networking concepts. How This Book Is Organized Although you could read this book cover-to-cover, it is designed to be exible and to allow you to easily move between chapters and sections of chapters to cover just the material you need to work with more.
If you do intend to read all of the chapters, the order in which they are presented is the ideal sequence. This book also contains three appendixes.
The following list summarizes the topics of this books elements: Chapter 1, Overview of Scalable InternetworksGood design is the key to a networks ability to scale. Poor design, not just an outdated protocol or router, prevents a network from scaling properly. A network design should follow a hierarchical model to be scalable.
This chapter discusses the components of the hierarchical network design model and the key characteristics of scalable internetworks. Twenty years ago, IP version 4 IPv4 offered an addressing strategy that, although scalable for a time, resulted in an inefcient allocation of addresses.
Over the past two decades, engineers have successfully modied IPv4 so that it can survive the Internets exponential growth. Today, IPv6 is slowly being implemented in select networks. This chapter explores the evolution and extension of IPv4, including the key scalability features that engineers have added to it over the years, such as subnetting, classless interdomain routing CIDR , variable-length subnet masking VLSM , and route summarization.
Hardcover Verified download. This book has alot of good exercises which illustrate useful and valuable concepts and their implementation. However, there are many, many inconsistancies between the config files, the output from show commands, and the figures. A typical example is Figure on page R4 in the figure has two serial connections but the interface addresses are not shown on the figure.
In the config file for R4 on page , only one serial interface has been configured. In some labs, the output from sample show commands includes intefaces or networks not configured in the figures or config files. I don't think I have worked through any lab in this book involving more than two routers which does not have this type of error. I think that the author has done a good job choosing which concepts to illustrate and then coming up with some labs to illustrate them.
Too bad that no one got the labs actually fully configured and working before taking the screen captures. The result is that many labs take about twice as long to complete as they should since you must figure out what are the mistakes and missing information to complete them.
Without that its just paper.
I took Henry's book with me on vacation and read several chapters and starting with chap 2 will get to work. The CCIE lab included will be a great guide solution not provided.
Might be coming. I went to Ciscopress' website; this is book is no longer available from them My guess is that they got hammered on the errata and are in the process of producing a 2nd ed. You may want to hold off a little on this title if you can.
I found this book to be a nice addition to the material I already have. The book is pages and the routing exam objectives are covered fully. The scenarios are not just walk through example you really need to think things out before beginning, a refreshing change. I also very much like the 1 14 hour study lab, as well as the review question at the end of each chapter. Each scenario has code examples to follow and learn by and again with the lab you really have to think about what you are doing be fore proceeding forward.
One tiny drawback is that there was no simulator, so you have to have access to equipment. If you are in a formal training setting this should be no problem. Overall a very good book. Reading the other highly rated reviews for this book it almost seems like I was reading something different, but I'm not. downloader beware! The book has great potential. However, there are a LOT of huge errors in this book. I counted over a dozen in as many pages.
I went to the Cisco Press website for the addendum, and it only had corrections for the first few pages. The errors go way beyond what the addendum lists. If you're using this book alongside actual time on gear then you won't have problems finding the errors. If you don't, the book will be confusing at times.
Every other Cisco Press book I've had has been good, and it's not uncommon to have an error or two in a technical book of this kind - but I was blown away at the lack of proofing. The book has indispensible examples, but always double check what you see with some practical examples on actual gear. If you are reading this book you probably don't need them anyway. The practicals are labs that you can do if you have the equipment. If you don't have the equipment, there are all the screenscapes you would normally see on the router console printed in the book.
The only complaint I have about the book is that there is no "suggested equipment" list that lets you know what equipment is used throughout the exercises. I don't think the author expected all the configurations to be done in a home lab as he suggests a as the switch used in CCNP Routing Self-Study Lab.
It would definitely help us crazyfolk that scour site for network equipment to keep next to our stereo, TV, and entertainment center. Practicals included: If you have been collecting Cisco equipment, and are looking for some exercises that will help you learn, this is a must have. That is not covered at all in the BCSN books.
Todd Lammle has got a book out that covers the new exam material. See all 13 reviews. There's a problem loading this menu right now.
